Dr. Shelly Cohen received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She then went on to complete both a medical degree and law degree (MD/JD) from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Cohen practiced law in New York City before returning to medicine to complete her internship and residency in Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine. She then completed a fellowship in Reproductive Psychiatry/Women’s Mental Health at the NYU School of Medicine.
Dr. Cohen is a board certified psychiatrist committed to the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, substance abuse disorders, psychiatric conditions related to medical disorders and psychotic disorders. She specializes in women’s mental health, specifically in diagnosing and treating peri-menstrual and menopause related mental health issues, as well as psychiatric conditions in pregnancy, related to infertility, and in the post-partum period. With a holistic and patient centered approach, Dr. Cohen combines an understanding of psychopharmacology and psychodynamic psychiatry to both alleviate symptoms and further, to help patients strive towards achieving meaning, balance and health in their lives.
In addition to her clinical interests, Dr. Cohen does research and has published in the area of psychiatry and law. She also teaches Clinical Bioethics at the NYU School of Medicine.
